FULLERTON, Calif. – Senior guard Alex Harris scored a game-high 20 points as the Cal State Fullerton men's basketball team defeated Caltech, 84-53, in an exhibition game at Titan Gym on Saturday night.
The native of Richmond, Calif., also led the Titans with six assists and made 8-of-10 from the free-throw line in the win.
Four other Titans reached double figures as redshirt senior Moses Morgan scored 12 points on a 4-of-7 shooting performance, while Steve McClellan added 12 points off the bench shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and adding five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Sophomore Joe Boyd poured in 10 points on a 4-of-6 shooting effort, while newcomer Kennedy Esume chipped in 10 points off the bench on 4-of-4 shooting.
Sophomore Sheldon Blackwell grabbed a game-high eight rebounds followed by seven boards from freshman Jamar Akoh.
The Titans shot 56.0 percent (28-of-50) from the floor for the game, and outrebounded the Beavers 34-26. Fullerton also made 33 trips to the free-throw line, converting 25 of those attempts.
In addition, the Titans dished out 16 assists while recording four blocks and 10 steals.
Fullerton also outscored Caltech 38-16 in the paint and scored 25 points off the Beavers' 21 turnovers.
Luke Lango, Andrew Hogue and Ricky Galliani led Caltech with 10 points apiece, respectively.
The Beavers shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the floor but knocked down a game-high nine three-pointers as six different players were able to convert from long distance.
Cal State Fullerton held a 39-26 lead at halftime as Morgan and Harris led the Titans with 12 and 11 points each, respectively.
The Titans held Caltech scoreless for the final 3:16 of the half to build its double-digit lead on a 9-0 run as Morgan started the spurt draining a three-pointer.
The Beavers were led by Lango's eight points in the first half as Caltech shot 75.0 percent (6-of-8) from three-point range with five different players knocking down long-distance buckets.
Caltech held its last lead of the game, 16-15, with 11:46 to play in the first after Galliani hit a three-point shot for the Beavers.
The official start of the season is set for Friday at Santa Clara as the Titans open the year on the road for the third consecutive season. Cal State Fullerton returns to Titan Gym at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22 to host San Jose State.
