FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton has been ranked as the ninth best college baseball program in the modern era, according to D1Baseball.com's biennial top 100 list released on Friday.
D1Baseball.com began this list in the fall of 2015 in an attempt to guide potential recruits to the programs that are in the best shape to succeed right away. The list is updated every two years.
For the purpose of this exercise, D1Baseball.com doesn't care about what happened in the 1970s or 80s, or even the 90s — that's ancient history to a potential recruit nowadays. Tradition is nice, but it's more important to establish a tradition of consistent winning in the last decade, and especially in the last five years. The ultimate goal here is to identify the programs in the best shape right now, with an eye toward the next five to 10 years.
The website began by awarding programs points for making regionals and having postseason success in the last five years, and a fewer amount of points for success between six and 10 years ago. It then made adjustments based on our evaluations of coaching staff quality and stability, facilities, scholarship/financial aid situation, conference dynamics, momentum, and recruiting and player development proficiency.
For the Titans, the No. 9 ranking is eight spots higher than they were two years ago, but two consecutive postseason appearances, including a trip to the College World Series in 2017 certainly makes it easy to see why the Titans have skyrocketed up this list.
Fullerton is the second highest ranked program on the West Coast, with Oregon State coming in just ahead of the Titans at No. 8. However, no one tops Fullerton when it comes to the Big West Conference, as the Titans are the highest ranked Big West member, with UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State being Fullerton's toughest competition checking in at No. 38 and No. 39 respectively.
In six seasons under Head Coach Rick Vanderhook, the Titans have consistently been at the top of the college baseball world, as they've advanced to the College World Series twice and qualified for the NCAA postseason in all six seasons. In fact, the Titans have qualified for postseason play in 26 consecutive campaigns.
Fullerton's recent dominance is second to none in the state of California, as UCLA is the next closest team on D1Baseball.com's list at No. 15, while Stanford checks in at No. 30.
