Titans Continue Road Trip at No. 3 UCLA and No. 24 Maryland

ROAD TRIP!: The Titans continue their season-long nine game road trip this week with games at UCLA on Tuesday followed by a weekend series at Maryland, taking a break from Big West Conference play. The trip to Maryland will be their farthest trek this season, a 2,628-mile journey.

RPI WATCH: The Titans moved up in the RPI rankings released by the NCAA on Monday, jumping 23 spots to No. 38 after a 3-1 week including taking two of three at UC Davis. This week's opponents will provide the Titans with a chance to move further up in the RPI if they can secure some road wins against the No. 3 RPI team in the nation (UCLA) and No. 30 team in the RPI (Maryland).

UCLA NOTES: The Bruins currently hold the top spot in the PAC-12 standings with a 12-3 record and jumped up to a top-3 spot in the rankings after taking two games in a critical three-game road series at USC over the weekend.

VERSUS THE PAC-12 CONFERENCE: The Bruins will be the third team from the PAC-12 Conference that Fullerton will face this season. The Titans are 1-3 so far after dropping the home opener to USC and two of three against Stanford. The Titans currently hold a 285-210-3 mark against teams from the Pacific-12 conference, with their most victories (65) coming against UCLA in 97 games. The Titans have also played Arizona 97 times, holding a 63-34 record. Fullerton has played Stanford on 99 (43-56) occasions, the most against any PAC-12 team. Stanford is one of just three teams in the conference to hold a winning record over the Titans all-time along with Arizona State (26-30) and Washington State (5-7).

TAKING ON THE TERPS FOR THE FIRST TIME: The three-game series between Cal State Fullerton and Maryland will be the first ever meetings between the teams all-time.

TITANS VERSUS THE BIG TEN: The Titans currently hold a 28-12 record against teams currently in the Big-10 Conference. Of the 13 teams in the conference, Fullerton has never played seven of them including Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern, Penn State and Rutgers. Fullerton dropped their first ever series against Indiana this past weekend, suffering a three-game sweep in Bloomington. Their most recent encounter with a Big Ten squad came in a two-game midweek series at Nebraska. The Titans split the series in the program's first ever trip to Lincoln. The Titans had played the Cornhuskers five times at Goodwin Field and three times in the postseason including a pair of meetings at the Stillwater Regional in 2014. The Titans are unbeaten against Michigan (3-0) and have beaten Ohio State in five of six overall meetings. Minnesota and Illinois are the only teams in the conference to have beaten the Titans on multiple occasions as Fullerton holds a 4-2 record against Illinois and a 7-5 mark against Minnesota all-time.

BIG TEN SWOON: The Titans will be looking for their first series victory over a Big Ten school this season when they head to Maryland on the weekend. The Titans are currently 1-4 this year after being swept in a three-game set at Indiana and splitting their two-game midweek series at Indiana.

RANK THIS: The Titans will take on a UCLA team ranked No. 3 in the Baseball America polls and a Maryland team that comes in at No. 24 in this weeks polls. Ranked teams have not been an issue for the Titans as they are currently 4-0 this season against teams ranked in the Baseball America Top-25.

THOMAS ESHELMAN ON GOLDEN SPIKES MIDSEASON WATCH LIST: Cal State Fullerton right-hander Thomas Eshelman was one of 60 players named to the midseason USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award watch list, it was announced on April 9. Eshelman has compiled a 3-4 record in eight starts so far this season. He has a 2.34 ERA with 61 strikeouts and four walks in 65 and 1/3 innings pitched. He tossed a complete-game shutout against then No. 5 Texas Tech on March 6, allowing five hits and striking out a career-high 14 batters. Eshelman has gone at least six innings in all nine of his starts, eight of them quality starts He pitched an eight-inning complete game as he took a 3-2 loss at UC Davis on Friday. He is currently ranked in the top-50 in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings (2nd, 0.55), strikeout-to-walk ratio (11th, 15.25), complete games (28th, 2), WHIP (38th, 0.95), and strikeouts (44th, 61)

OPENING AND CLOSING: Senior Tyler Peitzmeier has been nothing short of spectacular as the team's closer this season. Peitzmeier has been perfect in save situations this season, recording 12 straight saves on the season. He notched his 11th save in a 6-4 win Tuesday at San Diego. It was Peitzmeier's seventh multi-inning save of the year. He followed that up with his shortest outing of the season in a save situation, coming in to get the last out in the Titans 10-6 win over UC Davis on Saturday. His 12 saves rank him second in the nation and first in the Big West Conference. He is locked in a six-way tie for first in the country and has the third most innings pitched amongst those players. He is also currently tied for ninth on the Cal State Fullerton single-season saves list and is 10 behind the program record of 22 saves set by Scott Wright in 1984. This week, Peitzmeier will be on the opposite end of the spectrum as he is scheduled to make his first start of the season against UCLA on Tuesday.

LOVE HURST: Freshman Scott Hurst helped lead the Titans to a 3-1 week as he hit .500 (8-for-16) with a triple, five runs scored and four RBIs against San Diego and UC Davis. Went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in Sunday's series clinching 13-3 victory over the Aggies. He also had two walks and one stolen base this week, posting a .526 OBP and .625 slugging percentage in the four games. In his last nine games, Hurst is batting .324 (11-for-34) with five runs scored and four RBIs. He has one double and one triple in that stretch and has also stolen two bases.

INFIELD/OUTFIELD: Josh Vargas has been a jack-of-all-trades for the Titans, playing three different positions in 27 starts this season. He played the last two games in left field and has made nine starts at second base to go along with 16 starts in center field. No matter where he's played, Vargas' bat has been on fire as the Santa Ana, Calif. native is batting .469 (15-for-32) in his last 10 games. He has one double, two triples, three RBIs and has scored a team-best 12 runs during that stretch. He went 4-for-4 on Saturday in a 10-6 win at UC Davis. It was the first four-hit game of his career.

THREE BAGS PLEASE: The Titans are currently ranked 13th in the country and first in the Big West Conference with 14 triples this season. They trail Navy, which holds the top spot in the nation, by eight three-baggers. Individually, David Olmedo-Barrera is currently ranked 10th in the nation and also leads the Big West with five triples, three behind national leader Kent Blackstone of George Mason. Scott Hurst has three triples this year for the Titans, which ranks 66th in the country and third in the conference.

MAKING THE EIGHT: David Olmedo-Barrera tied a Cal State Fullerton record with 8 RBIs in one game, leading the Titans to a 13-2 victory in the rubber match of their series against Cal Poly on April 4. Olmedo-Barrera hit a grand slam to along with a two-run single, sacrifice fly and RBI hit-by-pitch to tie the record, which was set by Danny Dorn in 2003.

TRAVELING WITH THE LONG BALL: The Titans have belted 11 home runs this season and eight of them have come on the road. The Titans hit seven straight home runs on the road before David Olmedo-Barrera's grand slam against Cal Poly at Goodwin Field on April 4. Josh Estill unpacked the long ball on the road yet again over the weekend at UC Davis, belting a three-run shot to left field in the Titans 10-6 victory over the Aggies. The Titans have now won five straight games in which they hit a home run after losing the previous five games when they went deep in a game.

CLOSE EDGE: The Titans are now 6-6 this season in one-run games following their 3-2 loss at UC Davis on Friday afternoon. Last season, the Titans led the nation with 26 one-run games. They went 13-13 in those contests.

FREQUENT FLYERS: The Titans have had to make themselves comfortable in airplanes this season. The team has already traveled to Clearwater, Fla., Bloomington, Ind. and Lincoln, Neb. Overall, the Titans will log more than 11,000 miles in the air this season with their longest road trips (Maryland, 2,628 miles and Hawai'i, 2,494 miles) still ahead of them.
