Chapman Earns All-American Honors

FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton third baseman Matt Chapman was selected to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team by Collegiate Baseball, it was announced Thursday.

Chapman was one of seven All-American selections to come out of the Big West Conference, with five of those selections being pitchers.

It was Chapman's first career selection to the Louisville Slugger All-America team. He earned preseason All-America honors from Baseball America, making the second team and was also selected to the Big West All-Conference First Team on Tuesday for the first time in his Titans career.

Chapman caught fire in the second half of the season. In his final 29 games, Chapman hit .373 (38-for-102) with a .588 slugging percentage and .472 on-base percentage. He blasted three home runs in that stretch to go along with nine doubles, two triples and 29 RBI. Overall, Chapman hit .321 on the season and was tied for the team lead with 15 doubles. He led the squad with six round-trippers and 46 RBI.

On May 11, Chapman reached a career milestone as he drove in his 100th RBI as a member of the Titans. The Trabuco Canyon, Calif. native went 3-for-4 against UC Riverside with a double and two runs scored. In the first inning, Chapman drove in his 100th and 101st career RBI as he hammered a two-run double to left field.

In his Titans career, Chapman is batting .297 with 168 hits and 106 RBI. He is currently sitting on 99 career runs scored and has belted 36 doubles, five triples and 13 home runs in his career.

Chapman started 49 of his 50 games this season at third base and was excellent with the glove. He showcased his defensive ability on May 23 as he helped preserve Justin Garza's no-hitter against Cal State Northridge. Matadors' left-fielder Nick Blaser stepped up and laced the first pitch from Garza toward third, where Chapman fielded the liner perfectly on a short-hop and then threw a laser to first to get the second out. Garza completed the frame with his eighth strike out of the night and would go on to toss the fourth no-hitter in Titans history.
