Eshelman Named to Pitcher of the Year Watch List

LUBBOCK, Texas – Cal State Fullerton right-hander Thomas Eshelman was named to the 2014 Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List, it was announced Friday.

The Pitcher of the Year Award, sponsored by Diamond, will be presented during the National College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual Night of Champions on June 28 in Lubbock, Texas.

Eshelman was one of 47 pitchers from 16 conferences named to the list and was one of five representing the Big West Conference.  In addition to Friday's announcement, Eshelman has also been named to the Golden Spikes Award Initial and Midseason Watch Lists.

After a breakout season as a freshman in 2013 that included setting a new NCAA record with a 27.7-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and three freshman pitcher of the year awards, Eshelman has continued to shine in his sophomore campaign.

This season, the Carlsbad, Calif. native leads the team with 10 starts, which is also tied for 30th in the nation. Eshelman is 5-1 with a 2.12 ERA and two complete games on the season, including a complete-game shutout at Baylor on Mar. 7. He is amongst the NCAA leaders with 76.1 innings pitched this year and is tied for second on the Titans with 56 strikeouts and is allowing opponents to hit .227.

Eshelman is ranked third in the country with an 18.67 strikeout-to-walk ratio, allowing just three walks in his 76.1 innings of work to go along with his 56 punch-outs. The Titans' Friday-night starter is currently ranked third in the nation with a 0.35 walks allowed per nine innings average after leading the category for the bulk of the season. Both marks rank him first in the Big West.

The Pitcher of the Year Award was created in 2009 and is given annually to the nation's top collegiate pitcher. Stephen Strasburg (San Diego State) won the inaugural award in 2009 and other winners include Jonathan Gray (2013), Mark Appel (2012), Trevor Bauer (2011) and Alex Wimmers (2010).
