FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men's and women's track and field team wrapped up the first weekend of competition at the Big West Championships at UC Davis' Toomey Field & Woody Wilson Track.

The Titans also had a group of student athletes compete in the OXY Invite in Eagle Rock, Calif., on Saturday. 

Fullerton had strong performances at each meet, but the Titans weekend was highlighed by junior Bubba Ostrowksi as he finished fourth in the decathlon Saturday at the conference combined events championship. 

Fullerton will continue the conference championships next weekend (May 16-17) also at Toomey Field & Woody Wilson Track on the campus of UC Davis.

Below are recaps on both the Big West Championships and OXY Invite.

Big West Championships

Bubba Ostrowksi, Nicolette Garcia, and Taylor Frank all had impressive performances at the Big West Combined Events Championships over the weekend.

Ostrowski finished fourth with 6,286 points, while Garrett Demirjian of Long Beach State won the event with 7,014 points. 

On Saturday, Ostrowski took third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.06), sixth in the discus 116-06 and 11th in the 1500m (5:46.58). He also finished fourth in the pole vault (13-05) and sixth in the javelin throw.

On Friday, Ostrowski finished second in the 100-meter dash (11.48) and 10th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.01. In addition, he took first in the long jump (23-00.0), second in the shot put (41-04.25) and was ninth in the high jump (5-05.00).

On the women's side, Taylor Frank finished with a personal best score of 4,189 points to finish 12th, while Nicolette Garcia placed 14th with 3,897 points.

Frank's best performance of the day came in the javelin throw when she finished third with a toss of 110-11. Frank also took seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.16, while Garcia placed 10th with a mark of 15.33.

Garcia finished 15th in the high jump (4-06.25), 10th in the shot put (28-05.50), and 14th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.08. During the final day of completion, she finished 14th in the long jump (15-09.0), 9th javelin throw (87-11), and 11th in the 800-meter run (2:36.24).
 

Oxy Invite

On Saturday, the Titans participated in the OXY Invitational hosted by Occidental College. Fullerton sent a small group of student-athletes to compete in Eagle Rock, Calif., and had a solid performance before next weekend's conference championships.

On the track, Ana Valdovinos and Brandon Cook both set personal bests in the 800-meter dash with times of 2:14.14 and 1:52.15, respectively.

Also, freshman Janaya Shorty won her heat in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.31 and placed sixth overall amongst all competitors in the event. Alexandria Stewart continued her impressive season with a second place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.41.

In the field, Ty'Jalayah Robertson was Fullerton's top finisher in the high jump with a jump of 5-05.75 to finish second and freshman Bryn Williamson finished fifth in the pole vault with a leap of 11-03.75.

Alexandria Kemp
and Amanda Mercado also had good performances in the hammer throw as both had tosses of 164-07 to finish fifth.
