FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton track and field team heads to UC Irvine to compete in the 22nd annual Big West Challenge Cup this Friday at Anteater Stadium.
Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, and host UC Irvine will join the Titans, as the four schools will compete in the annual meet starting with the field events (hammer throw) at 2 p.m. and the track events (women's steeplechase) at 6 p.m. The day will wrap up with the men's 4x400 relay at approximately 8:55 p.m.
2013 Big West Challenge
Last year's Big West Challenge was highlighted by the Titans winning ten track events, including seven coming on the women's side. The women's 4x400 meter relay team (3:46.05) squeaked by UC Santa Barbara (3:46.38) to win the race, while also winning the 4x100m relay with a time of 46.21.
Katie Wilson won the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.96, while Deena Pierce won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.74. She also ran a 14.39 to place third in the 100-meter hurdles.
Ashley Sims went on to win the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.81, while placing second in the 200-meter (24.19). Emily Taylor won the 3000-meter run with an impressive personal best time of 9:59.99, while Casey Candelaria ran a personal best 4:34.17 and won the 1500-meter run to round out the success for the Titan women.
Javon May (52.83) took home the win in the 400-meter hurdles for the second consecutive week, while Taylor Ros set a personal best and finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.22
Taking a Look Back at Last Weekend's Cal/Nevada Championships
At the Cal/Nevada Championships last weekend, the Titans were led by senior Katie Wilson who won the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.60. The Titan women put up 68.5 points to finish in sixth, while the Fullerton men finish seventh.
Freshman Destinee Brown also lit things up for the Titan women, as she ran a 24.13 in the 200-meter dash to finish second in the finals, while teammate Ashley Sims finished fourth with a time of 24.65.
The Titan women also had a big day in the 4x100m relay as a team comprised of Janaya Shorty, Brown, Wilson, and Sims took home first place after posting a personal best time of 3:43.40.
The Titan men were led by Malik Johnson and Cliff King who each won their events on Saturday. Johnson took home first in the high jump with a personal record of 6-08.75, while King had a hammer throw of 146-06 to win his flight.
Luis Matos and Taylor Ros both placed fifth in their respective event on Saturday as Matos ran a season best 10.78 in the 100-meter dash finals, while Ros posted a time of 49.36 in the 400-meter dash finals. Brandon Cook (1:53.26) and Shelby Hernandez Jr. (1:53.29), who both qualified for the 800-meter run finals, finished fifth and sixth, respectively on Saturday.
Next Up
After competing in the Big West Challenge on Friday, the Titans will next head to multiple events next week starting with the California Invitational-Combined Events in Azusa, Calif. Fullerton will also compete in the Mt. SAC relays in Walnut, Calif., and the Bryan Clay Invitational also in Azusa on Saturday.
