Titans Dominate at UCI Spring Break Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. – Destinee Brown broke the meet record in the 100-meter and won the 200-meter, while the Titan men took home the team title to pace Cal State Fullerton at the Spring Break Invitational on the campus of UC Irvine over the weekend.

The Titan men put up 150 points on the weekend to beat out Northern Arizona (138), while the Fullerton women posted 119 to finish in second behind Northern Arizona (155.50).

Brown ran a 11.74 in the 100-meter dash, which breaks Shavine Hodges of Grand Canyon previous record of 11.79. In addition, she ran a 24.06 in the 200-meter, making her a double winner on the day. Senior Katie Wilson had a solid day, producing a first place time of 54.38 in the 400-meter, which bested the next best runner by more than three seconds.

In the 400-meter dash the Titans dominated the field as they swept the podium with a 1-2-3 finish comprised of Wilson, Morgan Thompson (57.22), and Tigest Nealy (57.36).

Along with Brown in the 100-meter senior Ashley Sims finished in second place with a time of 11.90 and second in the 200-meter (24.17). Wilson also finished third in the same 200-meter dash heat with a time of 24.67, while Nealy took home first in her preliminary with a time of 24.73.

On the men's side Daniel York-Mouton took home the 400-meter dash title with a time of 47.95, while Joshua Gordon finished in fourth with a time of 48.57. In the 100-meter dash the Titans finished 2nd-4th as Luis Matos (10.86), Sole (10.94), and Malek Walls (10.98) competed for the Titans.

The Titan men also found success at the Spring Break Invitational, as Gordon and York-Mouton finished second and third in the 200-meter dash with time of 21.68 and 21.94, respectively. Nick Sole won his preliminary heat in the same event with a time of 21.88.  

"It was a great day for the Titans as we saw some great performances," said head coach John Elders.

The Titans had their best field performance of the day by Paris Pijuan in the pole vault as the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native recorded a personal best of 16-00.75. Pijuan recorded his first career jump of over 16 feet. In the 800-meter run Brandon Cook placed second with a time of 1:53.11.

The women's 4x100 meter relay team (Brown, Sims, Alexandria Stewart, and Alexis Stewart) finished second with a time of 46.94, while the 4x400 meter relay team finished fourth (Wilson, Pierce, Thompson, Nealy). On the men's side, the Titans finished second with a time of 42.13 (Matos, York-Mouton, Sole, Gordon).

In the hurdles Deena Pierce posted her best season opener in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.22 to finish third and Nicolette Garcia also recorded a personal best in the event with a time of 15.36. On the men's side Bubba Ostrowski had a good meet as he finished sixth in the long jump with a jump of 22-04.25. Freshman Ty'Jalayah Robertson finished third in the high jump with a jump of 5-03.0 to round out the jumps.  

Competing in the 3000-meter steeplechase for the first time in his collegiate career Daniel Ramirez posted a time of 9:35.57 to finish third.

"The coaching staff still hopes they team can improve and get better as we prepare for the Big West Conference Championships."

The Titans will now head to Riverside, Calif., to compete in the UC Riverside Invitational next weekend.
