Titans Open Season at Riverside Quad Meet

Titans Open Season at Riverside Quad Meet

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton track and field team kicks off its 2014 outdoor season this Saturday, March 8 at Riverside CC in a quadrangular meet at Wheelock Stadium.

The Titans will be sending 50 athletes up to Riverside, Calif., to compete with three other schools, host Riverside CC, Long Beach State, and Pepperdine. For the past seven seasons the Tigers have hosted LBSU for a dual meet, but for the first time will host two more schools.

The meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw followed by field events at 1 p.m. and running events at 2 p.m.

"This is a great opportunity for our team, especially the men to get into the rhythm of competition after a very impressive indoor season by the women," said head coach John Elders. "This weekend will give the mid-distance runners a chance to run longer events, while having our normal long distance runners run events like the 1500m."

The Titans will send jumpers, throwers, pole-vaulters, and middle distance runners to the meet this weekend.

For the men, thrower Emmanuel Martinez, who recorded a team-best mark of 162-00 in the hammer throw and Steven Parsons, who recorded a team-best throw of 132-09 in the discus at last year's Big West Challenge will compete this weekend.

Also, junior long jumper Malek Walls, who posted the 13th best jump (23-00.75) at the Big West championship last season, is looking to improve on an impressive sophomore campaign from a year ago.

Fullerton will have numerous distance runners compete in Riverside this weekend led by junior Jayson Perez and sophomore Jeff Little. Little won the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Steve Scott Invitational last season and Perez led the men at the Big West Championships in the steeplechase finishing third with a time of 9:27.86.

After recording five new school records, numerous personal bests, and competing in two new events in the indoor season, the Titan women are ready for the outdoor portion of its season.

With the sprinters off this weekend, 18 women are set to compete in multiple events, which includes distance, throws, jumps, and pole vaulting.

Ana Valdovinos who broke the school record in the one-mile run during the indoor season will compete in the 3000m run, while thrower Amanda Mercado who threw a personal best of 16.38m at the MPSF last weekend will also participate in this weekend's meet.

After this weekend's meet the Titans will return home to host the Ben Brown Invitational on March 14-15 at the Titan Track and Field Complex.
