Titans Conclude Indoor Track & Field Season at MPSF Championships

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton indoor track and field team will make its very first trip ever to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championship this weekend on the campus of the University of Washington at Dempsey Indoor this Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1.

Fullerton will send a group of 19 athletes who will compete in 15 events. A total of 17 teams will participate for the championships. The group is comprised of members of the Big West, Pac-12, West Coast Conference, and for the first time now includes all eleven Pac-12 indoor track and field programs. Along with the Titans, USC will be joining the mix this year, sending a women's team only. 

The MPSF Indoor Track and field celebrates its 22nd year of compeition and Friday's action begins at noon (PT) with the women's weight throw, while Saturday kicks off with the women's shot put final at 10:30 a.m. (PT). 

As the Titans head into the MPSF championships, the team has recorded five new school records, set numerous personal bests, and even competed in two events for the first time in school history, pentathlon and distance medley relay. Taylor Frank and Nicolette Garcia will compete in the pentathlon for the second time this season, while a team of Ana Valdovinos, Tigest Nealy, Tejera Dial (pictured right), Arianna Fuentes, and Deena Pierce will participate in the distance medley relay.  

This weekend junior Katie Bathgate is set to participate in the 5000-meter run for the first time this season, while a 4x400m relay team of Katie Wilson, Ashley Sims, Destinee Brown, Alexandria Stewart, and Nealy will compete.

Already off to an impressive freshman campaign freshman Destinee Brown will compete in the 60m, 200m, and 4x400m relay. 

The Titans last competed at the Boise State Team Challenge in Boise, Idaho on Feb. 15, and had its most productive meet of the indoor season as the team witnessed a new school record, multiple broken personal records, and claimed seven top-three finishes.

Brown came away a double-winner in both events she competed in. The Los Angeles, Calif., native won the 60-meter dash after finishing with a time of 7.51 and claimed first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.33.

Along, with Brown, the Titans had four athletes advance to the 60-meter dash finals and junior Tejera Dial broke her own school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.89. Junior Deena Pierce also came away victorious in the 60-meter hurdles as she posted a personal best time of 8.77.

Off the track, freshman Ty'Jalayah Robertson finished second in the triple jump with a personal best of 11.87 meters, while Jasmyne Davis finished third in the long jump with a jump of 5.38m.

Also, weight throwers Amanda Mercado and Alexandria Kemp set personal records in Boise as Mercado had of best of 16.18m, while Kemp tossed a best of 16.16m.

Following this weekend's meet, certain Titans could qualify in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N. M.
