2013-14 Athletics Summary (PDF)

FULLERTON, Calif. - The first week of classes at Cal State Fullerton signifies a new year for Titan Athletics.

We already started the year on a great note last Friday night when 1,365 fans filled in Titan Stadium to watch the Fullerton women’s soccer team and No. 22 BYU battle to a 1-1 tie in double overtime.

What else do the Titans have to look forward to in the upcoming academic year?

Well, many changes will be taking place around the athletic facilities on campus.

This past spring the University conducted a consultative process on a Student Success Imitative (SSI). As approved by the Student Fee Committee, President García and CSU Chancellor White, it includes $60 annually, per student, for athletic facilities. The amount will be phased in over a three-year period, starting in the 2014-2015 academic year.

While many projects are still in the planning and approval stages, these are a few of the projects the Athletics Department is considering for the future (in no particular order.)

OPERATIONS: 

- Fund 16 new scholarships for men’s and women’s golf, tennis, and all five track and field and cross-country programs
- Hire a new Life Skills Coordinator

FACILITIES:
- Lighting study for all venues, with implementation starting on the east and west fields
- New scorer’s tables in Titan Gym
- New video/score board at Titan Stadium

Titan Athletics made a commitment to the student leadership during the SSI approval process that lighting the grass fields (next to Titan House and north of Titan Gym) would be a very high priority project. This project will be very impactful on the students actually paying the fee, because the grass fields are utilized by the student body, club sports, and KHS classes.

Titans that are on campus will already see some improvements that have been made over the summer. Stop by the south hallway of the Kinesiology and Health Science building to see the basketball/volleyball mural highlighting the coaches’ offices. In addition, the wall at Titan Stadium has been rebranded with a very menacing Tuffy as opponents think twice about bearing down on goal. Fullerton also now has a dedicated postgame press conference room for teams that compete in Titan Gym.

On the field, women’s soccer has just begun to defend its 2013 championship, while men’s soccer is not far behind as first-year head coach George Kuntz takes over the program, and looks to build Fullerton into a national contender once again. In addition, volleyball and cross-country will begin their respective seasons this week.

And while it may be a little early to think about the winter, the men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams have already announced their upcoming schedules.

And of course it’s exciting to think about the future, but let’s not forget about the past.

Last year, we celebrated three Big West Conference championships as the women’s soccer team started the trend by winning the 2013 Big West Tournament, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Women’s golf freshman Martina Edberg became the first golfer in the history of the women’s program to win the individual crown, while the men’s golf team captured its second consecutive Big West championship.

After losing put on an NCAA Tournament berth in 2013 due to a playoff, the Titans won the title outright in 2014, and finished 11^th at the Sugar Grove NCAA Regionals.

In addition, the Titan baseball program made its 23^rd consecutive trip to the postseason, while the outdoor track and field team sent five student-athletes to the NCAA West Regionals.

Fullerton totaled 36 student-athletes receiving Big West honors, 19 Big West Players of the Week, six all-region selections and four All-Americans.

Head men’s golf coach Jason Drotter was voted the Big West Coach of the Year, while seven student-athletes garnered Big West Player of the Year awards.

Our staff was able to increase our sponsorship, fundraising and ticketing revenue, while the Titans’ new weight room was unveiled in November. In addition, Cal State Fullerton hosted the 2013 DIRECTV Wooden Legacy tournament, which attracted a record 14,982 fans.

Off the field, 60 former and current Titan student-athletes received their degrees, and 48 were named to the all-conference all-academic teams.

The Titans have plenty to look forward to in 2014, and much of it starts this weekend as the women’s volleyball team hosts the Titan Classic, the women’s soccer team hosts matches with Denver and Georgia, and our men’s and women’s cross country teams host the Mark Covert Classic at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif.
