Diemer and Galarza Named Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year

IRVINE, Calif. – Junior Austin Diemer and sophomore Samantha Galarza were named Cal State Fullerton’s Big West Scholar Athletes of the Year, it was announced by the league on Tuesday.

The 2013 Big West Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year from the nine conference institutions will be honored at a special banquet on Thursday, March 13 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Garden Grove.  Each institution selected its own honorees.

Austin Diemer
In 2013, Cal State Fullerton outfielder Austin Diemer was named to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII Team and to the Big West Conference All-Academic Team.
The Communications/Broadcast Journalism major participates in the annual “Challenger Clinic”, working closely with individuals with special needs,  and he volunteered at the Barnyard Wiffle Ball Invitational. Carrying a 3.77 GPA, Diemer has earned Dean’s List honors in each of his semesters as a Titan.
The Rocklin, Calif., native was named to the 2013 Big West Conference second team after appearing in 53 games and batting .311 on the season with 21 runs scored, 38 hits, five doubles, two triples, 12 RBIs and eight stolen bases as a sophomore. He helped the Titans win their 27th league championship after batting .351 in Big West games,
In 2014, Diemer has started in seven of the team's first 10 games. He has eight hits and has scored four runs to go along with four RBIs. He has a .317 on-base percentage to go along with a .222 batting average and is a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts. 
 

Samantha Galarza
In 2014, Samantha Galarza has started 18 games totaling 15 hits, two home runs and six runs scored with 10 RBIs. Galarza has a .316 on-base percentage to go along with a .278 batting average while collecting 22 total bases. 
With a 3.95 GPA, the sophomore shortstop and second baseman hit .211 in 2013 while recording four runs scored and four RBI. The infielder logged a .944 fielding percentage and recorded 59 putouts. The communications major has been named a Dean’s Scholar, a President’s Scholar and has earned Dean’s List honors every semester at Cal State Fullerton. Galarza received the CSF Big West Sportsmanship Award in 2013 and is currently a Titan SAAC Representative. The sophomore aspires to play softball professionally and hopes to pursue investigative journalism and missionary work.
